Longmores launch their new Inheritance Disputes team

Each year, about 10,000 wills are contested in England and Wales, with an increasing number of cases going to the High Court. This rise has led to the launch of a new Inheritance Disputes team at Longmores, headed by partner Lauren Mackenzie.

Inheritance disputes, or ‘contentious probate’, are disputes about a deceased person’s estate.  They arise when someone challenges the validity of a will, makes a claim for money from an estate, or raises concerns about how executors or trustees are carrying out their duties.

Factors driving demand for legal advice include blended families with complex structures, significant wealth held by older generations, the rising cost of living and property prices, and increased access to information regarding legal rights.

Lauren spotted the rise in inheritance disputes ten years ago, and developed specialist knowledge and qualifications to help clients resolve these disputes after, or even before, the death of a loved one. It has been a natural progression for Lauren’s career in law, which started in 2006 in London. Experience in banking and finance litigation enables Lauren to guide her clients through the financial aspects of an inheritance dispute, while paying keen attention to the personal issues and family dynamics at play. She brings a strategic approach to entrenched and highly emotional disputes, offering clarity about likely outcomes and practical advice on what can be a long journey to obtain a settlement.

Lauren is joined in the Inheritance Disputes team by solicitor, Kirsty Adamson, and legal secretary, Charlene Andronicou. Kirsty has grown her knowledge of inheritance disputes alongside Lauren and is known for her great rapport with clients and good eye for detail.

Commenting on the launch of the new Inheritance Disputes team, Lauren said:

“I am excited to head the Inheritance Disputes team at a time when demand for legal advice in the area continues to grow. The interesting case law and unique human stories make for rewarding work. Clients in this area require pragmatic advice, with an understanding of the personal toll such disputes can take.”

Richard Horwood in his new co-leadership role within the firm said:

“Lauren and Kirsty’s dedication to assisting our clients at a time when emotions and stakes are high means this team will continue to be in demand.”

The emergence of this new Inheritance Disputes team from within the ranks of the firm is another success story for those who chose to build their careers at Longmores, all the while serving the changing needs of their clients.
